The Place:
Tucked away in a suburb of Portland just 15 minutes from the city center you will find a small comfy looking restaurant on East Burnside Street. Inside a dimly lit cozy and relaxed atmosphere welcomes you with a nice bar and ample amount of seating. With a very attentive wait staff they are sure to please.
The Food:
Southern delicacies fill up the menu making it so very hard to decide which to choose. Each of the plates are made with locally sourced, organically farmed foods and locally caught fish. We went ahead and chose the intricate beet salad mixed with pickled jicama and kohlrabi topped with frisee, goat cheese, whipped avocado, and garnished with an assortment of citrus fruits. Round 2 we went for the shrimp and grits, topped with 4 southern seared jumbo shrimp, and garnished with green onions and bacon. To top it off we ordered the pecan crusted trout locally caught here in Oregon. The trout was moist and perfectly fried. Although sitting on a bed of grainy mustard sauce and some roasted fingerling potatoes and cauliflower, the fish maintained its crispy exterior, and when mixed with the rest of the plate really hit home. The portion sizes are quite large. What we ordered was enough for two, with a little leftovers to take home.
WARNING: The homemade hot sauce is really good but very very spicy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Drinks:
The drink selection is quite nice, with a barreled and aged whiskey flight, along with locally brewed Oregon Beers. I went for a 12 oz glass of a Pecan Pie Porter for only $4.50. It had a smooth rich tone with a hint of sweetness from the nuttiness of the pecan pie flavor they were trying to accomplish ending with a nice smooth finish. It paired nicely with the meal.
Side Notes:
Our waitress disclosed to us that the Fried Chicken is their specialty! It was a meat filled week so we opted for the seafood entrees which as was already said did not disappoint! 🙂
You can call in ahead of time to find out the wait. We arrived around 7:45 and had to wait about 15-20 minutes before we are seated. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations!

I give Screen Door a 4 out of 5 stars! Overall the food was great, service good, and reasonably priced! I’m curious to try their homemade banana cream pie and red velvet layer cake which I will be sure to get the next time I’m in Portland! I would definitely put Screen Door at the top of my list of places that I would go back to eat at if I find myself in Oregon again! Definitely give it a try, it won’t disappoint!
